Peter Capaldi Now Favourite To Become The New Doctor

A surge of bets have flooded in overnight for 'The Thick Of It' star Peter Capaldi to be installed as the next Doctor, seeing his odds at British bookmaker Ladbrokes fall to just 6/4. Though Capaldi did not even register on the radars this time yesterday, there are now strong rumours surrounding the Scottish actor as punters continue to place their bets on him taking over the role from Matt Smith after the Eleventh Doctor departs at Christmas.

Capaldi is not a new face to Doctor Who fans, having previously starred as John Frobisher in the Torchwood mini-series 'Children of Earth' and as Caecilius in the Doctor Who episode 'The Fires of Pompeii', but he is best known by British fans for his starring role in the political satire 'The Thick Of It'. At the age of 55, he would represent a shift back towards an older Doctor that many fans have been calling for, providing a marked contrast to the current incumbent - Matt Smith was only 26 when he took the role, and showrunner Steven Moffat has recently confirmed he is open to the idea of an older Doctor.
"We've never not considered an older Doctor. It is completely on all the lists we make - there are absolutely older Doctors."
With that in mind, the current odds as of midday today (July 30th) are as follows;

Peter Capaldi 6/4
Ben Daniels 5/1
Ben Whishaw 8/1
David Harewood 10/1
Rory Kinnear 16/1
Dan Stevens 20/1
Bill Bailey 50/1
