Doctor Who's Steven Moffat On Matt Smith's Final Episode

Filming began on the Christmas special of Doctor Who this week, and showunner Steven Moffat spoke to Entertainment Wise at Monday night's TVChoice Awards about how it was progressing. He explained that because the episode marks Matt Smith's final appearance as the Eleventh Doctor, filming has so far been an emotional but "incredibly cheery" experience.
"It's hard to let go, watching him on set yesterday and he's so heartbreakingly good. You get all excited about the new doctor and then you go back and you see Matt on his first day back on set and you think 'oh my God that's what we're losing'. He's so brilliant and he's at the height of his powers in the part, he's so funny, so clever, so inventive."
Moffat was asked about the atmosphere on set, and he said:
"It's fine. I mean it was an emotional start to the week, but he's actually been incredibly cheery. He's a fantastic leading man from that point of view. He bounds on set and gets everyone laughing and moving."
The Christmas special will of course see Smith's Doctor regenerate into the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, and Moffat was full of praise for his new leading man.
"He's a brilliant actor and he wanted the part so that was it. He's known to be a Doctor Who fan and genius level actor and came at the right time for the Doctor."
Smith's swansong as the Doctor is scheduled to be broadcast on BBC1 on Christmas Day.
