Doctor Who: Matt Smith on River Song and the Twelfth Doctor

With Alex Kingston's River Song seemingly vanishing for good at the end of last year's The Name of the Doctor, fans have been speculating if River, a key fixture of Matt Smith's time as the Doctor, will be returning to meet Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor in Series 8.

Steven Moffat has left the idea doubtful but open - but at New Orleans Comic Con recently, Matt Smith stated that he doesn't want River to return alongside Capaldi.

Smith said to fans at a panel at the convention:
"I'm really possessive about Alex [Kingston]. I said this to Steven, I was like, 'Listen, just don't. Just not Alex. Anyone else, but don't give him River' - but Peter is the Doctor now so hey, what can I do? I think that Steven will be planning things that are going to unfold over years. I think he'll reinvent the folklore, and it will become Peter's folklore.
"But I am really proud of the fact that Alex was part of number Eleven's life. My wife!"
What do you think? Do you want River to return alongside Capaldi's Doctor, or do you want her appearance last year to be her final one? Leave a comment below!

Series 8 airs later this year on BBC One.
