Tom Baker Remains Best Selling Doctor

It has been over 30 years since his era ended but the 4th Doctor, Tom Baker, still retains the pulling power for collectors and potential Doctor Who fans. It is no surprise then that Four continues to be one of the most beloved Doctors, and has been for decades, but the news that his merchandise still outsells both the 10th and 11th Doctors, is an interesting point on the state of the Doctor Who fandom, but that is a debate for another time.

The news comes from a release of findings from eBay. According to the statistics, Tom Baker's Doctor outsells both David Tennant and Matt Smith on the retail site:

Top Selling Doctors 10-1
  1. Tom Baker
  2. David Tennant
  3. Matt Smith
  4. William Hartnell
  5. Paul McGann
  6. Patrick Troughton
  7. Sylvester McCoy
  8. Colin Baker
  9. Peter Davison
  10. Peter Capaldi
Interestingly, the 1st Doctor, William Hartnell, is 4th in the listings, merchandise from Mr Hartnell's era being the oldest and perhaps the most rare and lost. However, despite his tenure being cut short, it is Sylvestor McCoy as the 7th Doctor whose merchandise is the most lucrative, fetching prices close to £500 per figurine. The most plausible reason for this is likely due to the waning popularity of Doctor Who towards the end of Mr McCoy's time in the TARDIS. Very little merchandise would have been made due to such small demand at the time, thus their rarity exploded.
