Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi Nearly The Eighth Doctor?

Peter Capaldi has revealed that he was given the chance to audition for the Doctor Who television movie, but passed on the opportunity.

Had Capaldi auditioned and been successful, he would have played the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 film, a role which eventually went to Paul McGann.

Speaking in the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly, which went on sale this week, Capaldi said:
“I didn't go [to the audition]. I loved the show so much, and I didn't think I would get it, and I didn't want to just be part of a big cull of actors.”
Capaldi faced a very different situation when up for the part of the Twelfth Doctor, however, as the show's lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has previously said that Capaldi was his only choice for the role:
"Yes, the list went, 'Peter Capaldi' - it was a very short list! Honestly, there was only one audition this time... and it wasn't an audition so much as... he came round my house and we put him on video to see what he looked like as the Doctor and, gosh, he was terribly good!"
Read more from Capaldi, as well as co-star Jenna Coleman, Steven Moffat and director Ben Wheatley in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, out now.

Doctor Who returns with Series 8 opener Deep Breath on Saturday 23rd August.
