We last saw UNIT scientist Osgood being cruelly killed by Missy (Michelle Gomez) in the Doctor Who series eight finale Death in Heaven, but despite this the Doctor's biggest fan, played by Ingrid Oliver, will be making a return to the show for series nine.
Osgood's first and only other appearance to date in Doctor Who was in the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor alongside the shape-shifting Zygons, and it has been confirmed that she will be coming face-to-face with the sucker-covered aliens once again in the new series.
The two-part episode, written by Peter Harness (Series 8's Kill The Moon), is currently being filmed in Cardiff and will also feature the return of UNIT's Chief Scientific Advisor - and Osgood's boss - Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave).
Speaking on set, Ingrid Oliver commented on her reappearance as Osgood:
“As every actor who’s worked on Doctor Who will tell you, there’s always the secret hope you'll get the call asking you to come back. To actually receive that call is both unexpected and brilliant. The word ‘honour’ gets banded about a lot, but it really is, it’s an honour. Especially because I was so sure Osgood was a gonner after the last series!”
Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer, said:
“Osgood is back, fresh from her recent murder at the end of last series. We recently confirmed that Osgood was definitely dead and not returning - but in a show about time travel, anything can happen. The brilliant Ingrid Oliver is back in action. This time though, can the Doctor trust his number one fan?”Also confirmed to be joining the double episode in guest roles are Jaye Griffiths, Cleopatra Dickens, Sasha Dickens, Abhishek Singh, Todd Kramer, Jill Winternitz, Nicholas Asbury, Jack Parker and Aidan Cook. Further guest cast for the rest of the series will be announced over the coming months.
Doctor Who will be back on our screens with series nine in Autumn 2015.
