"I can’t say I worry about mortality, but it’s impossible to get to my age and not have a little contemplation of it. We’re all just passing time."With a career spanning six decades, Hurt played a number of famous roles. To some he was Ollivander, the wand maker from Harry Potter; to others he was John Merrick, aka. the Elephant Man; but to Doctor Who fans he will always be remembered as the War Doctor.
Hurt became famous for his many on-screen deaths - perhaps his most famous in Alien when the alien bursts out of his chest - and said himself:
“I think I’ve got the record. It got to a point where my children wouldn’t ask me if I died, but rather how do you die?”We were so very lucky to have such a distinguished actor play a character that changed everything for the 50th Anniversary special and even luckier that he continued to play the character in audio dramas.
Today is a sad day and our thoughts are with his family at this time.
