Do we already know who Gatiss is playing in the Christmas special?

There's been a lot of hype for this year's much anticipated Christmas Special, Twice Upon A Time, and for good reason. David Bradley is back as the First Doctor, Pearl Mackie is back as Bill and the Doctor is struggling through his regeneration. But the details and footage we've seen so far have also posed more questions than they have answers.

One such question is the nature of Mark Gatiss' character. Other than the fact he's a Captain, we know very little about who Gatiss is playing. However, some clever fans think they've worked it out based on a line from the trailer.

During the trailer, the Captain says "These Police Boxes, they’re ever so good, aren’t they?" which has led curious fans on Tumblr to believe that Gatiss could in fact be the inventor of the British blue police boxes.

Gilbert MacKenzie-Trench was a surveyor and architect working for the Metropolitan police, known for designing police stations, residential buildings and other constructions throughout the 20th century. He also fought in the First World War in his late 20s and early 30s.
As you can see from the photos above, Gatiss does look very similar to Trench with similar hair and moustache.

The theory fits pretty well, especially given that it's Steven Moffat who has written the special and he does have a penchant for making meta references. To top it all off, Gilbert MacKenzie-Trench was also Scottish, and we know how Moffat loves his Scots.

What do you think? Will we be seeing Gatiss as the inventor of the police box? I guess we'll just have to wait until Christmas to find out.
