Carey Mulligan said 'No' to being the Doctor's companion

Blink is one of the most popular, well known and quoted of the modern Doctor Who episodes. However, when Carey Mulligan who played Sally Sparrow was asked if she wanted to be a companion she declined.

Carey Mulligan is a 32 year old actress from Westminster who is well known for her parts in such big films as Pride and Prejudice and The Great Gatsby. Though in 2007 she was ever so briefly part of the Whoniverse as she played a very down to Earth young woman named Sally Sparrow in a single episode of Doctor Who entitled Blink. It was no small role, considering she ended up almost single handedly saving the tenth Doctor and Martha, who was his companion at the time. You would think such an impressive feat would warrant Sally a seat on the TARDIS. However, Steven Moffat, who wrote the script for Blink, recently explained why that never ended up happening.

The producers were really taken by the actress and offered her a more long term position on the show, asking Mulligan, 'Do you want to be the next companion?' However, despite the actress being reportedly ecstatic about having been cast on the show, Moffat suggested, ‘I don’t think she was much of a fan, or anything'. The actress declined the offer and went on to do other things in her career. Perhaps the long term commitment to Doctor Who would have conflicted with her being available for other jobs at the time.

When asked if anyone had ever tried getting her to come back to the program, Moffat explained, 'No. I know it’s a no'. He went on to suggest, 'does that character become more special because you never see her again? She just passes through the Doctor’s life.'

One can not help but wonder what it would have been like, had she accepted the offer. What sort of companion would Sally have been? What sort of adventures might she have had with the Doctor? Let us know what you think!
